Palmer Luckey Bashes Magic Leap as 'Tragic Heap'
Magic Spring is facing some harsh criticism from Palmer Luckey, the inventor of the Oculus Rift, who published a scathing review of the augmented reality headset, deriding it as the "Tragic Heap."
"It does not evangelize on almost whatever of the promises that allowed them to monopolize funding in the AR (augmented reality) investment community," Luckey wrote on his website.
The Oculus VR co-founder is the latest critic to claim the headset has failed to live up to the hype, despite Magic Spring raising over $two billion in funding. Before this month, the visitor's AR headset, the Magic Spring Ane, went on sale for a whopping $2,300.
The product is mainly for developers and early adopters with deep pockets. Merely in his review, Luckey said the headset was "less of a functional developer kit and more of a flashy hype vehicle that nearly nobody tin can actually use in a meaningful mode."
One of his biggest gripes is reserved for Magic Bound'southward handheld controller, which is designed to assist you navigate through whatever virtual environs the headset displays. To accomplish this, the controller uses a magnetic sensor coil to track the position of the controller relative to the headset. However, Palmer said the engineering science was tedious to respond and "essentially unusable" when yous're next to big metal objects.
"Magnetic tracking is hard to pull off in the best of cases, but this is probably the worst implementation I have seen released to the public," he said.
Palmer also dismissed the headset'due south onboard software, calling it "basically an Android Wear watch menu that floats in front of yous." He and then compared the Magic Spring I to Microsoft's HoloLens augmented reality headset, which came out two years ago, but is intended for developers.
"This is more Hololens i.1 than Consumer AR i.0," Luckey said. "Consumer AR can't happen without advocacy, and it seems those advancements will exist coming from other companies. "
In response, Magic Leap's CEO Rony Abovitz took some veiled shots at Luckey over Twitter with a reference to the animated show Avatar: The Terminal Air Bender. "I wonder who is the biting, aroused, banished Zuko in our story?" he tweeted.
Last twelvemonth, Luckey resigned from Oculus VR following a controversy over his funding of a pro-Trump group, which created anti-Hillary Clinton memes. He is now leading a startup called Anduril Industries
Despite his criticism of Magic Jump, Luckey did applaud the company's determination to reduce the weight of the headset by separating the computer and placing it into a puck-like device that you wear around your waist.
"This approach also allows them to use much more than powerful chips than they could feasibly cram into a caput worn device," he said, giving the feature an "A+."
