How To Clean Heat Exchanger Lars Minitherm

Thread: Teledyne Laars boiler problems... recomendations?

  1. Hi folks. I'v got a teledyne-Laars minitherm 2 boiler organisation. I did not take the unit cleaned terminal year and at present problems have developed with carbon buildup on the heat exchanger which prevents proper operation. The HVAC tech is saying the unit should be replaced vs. an acid bath cleaning of the exchanger.
Regardless, I'v considered this unit to exist a lemon (numerous issues with rollover switch, melted electronic controls etc)

I'm looking for a unit that will be reliable (apparently with the proper maintainance) Whatsoever suggestions to my situation???

    Cheers

  2. SOmething else must accept been wrong for so much carbon build up in a year. Perhaps the render temps were too depression and soot was forming in the heat exchanger. The minitherm is your bones efficency gas boiler. What e'er you get brand sure it's installed right because something killed this 1. Do you have large cast iron rads and pipes?

  3. Yep I do..I nice big castiron banality that has bigger passage way that are not so restricted.

And I mean on both side of the hx.

Minitherm audio over hype to me likewise.

  4. Something isn't right. These boiler get sulfer builup between the fin tubes on the estrus exchanger later many years. But one yr shouldn't make a departure. They have to exist cleaned from the superlative and bottom with baffles and burners removed. If this wasn't done last year or e'er then this is the trouble.
If yous have a lot of excess builup every year then maybe you accept venting bug. Maybe you take only single wall smoke pipe instead of b vent, low temps in this vent piping causing water from the vent pipe to run back to the boiler.
Or y'all have high sulfer content in your gas. This would be a trouble in any boiler.
Or no featherbed piping betwixt supply and render water pipe, especially in large cast iron radiators causing condensation on the heat exchanger.

Regardless, if the boiler is close to 20 years old, I would get a new boiler equally in that location is not much life left in this i afterwards xx years.

Peerless makes a nice gas boiler.

  5. mine ran in my cottage cranium for 10 years with a heavily condensing flue ....

    y'all have some other issues

  6. Information technology would be prissy to know if it was sulfer build upwardly or soot.
Soot acquired past not enough combustion air, dingy burners, natural gas boiler with propane hooked upward, loftier altitude location with bounding main level burner orifices, improperly set propane installation. The list goes on and on.

  7. Nosotros've got one (out of a dozen or more than that we installed) giving us fits. Loves to trip the limit past the burners. We figure information technology is due to a poor venting arrangement. Did take a lot of lint buildup that was easily brushed off. No sooting at all. Is this LP?

  8. more info

Thanks for all the replies. The house is near 100 years old and nevertheless has the old cast atomic number 26 rads and pipes. When I had the Teledyne put in eight years agone, at that place was a new flu liner installed. Would I be right in saying that if there'southward a lot of carbon buildup (apart from the sulphar) that it's due to incomplete combustion??? I have an outside air vent leading directly onto the furnace and the exit hasses get right upwards the chimney. To avoid this with the purchase of a new furnace, what would I be best to inquire a professional???

    Thanks for all the assistance.

    Cheers
    Grant

  9. actress info

The burner is natural gas fed (Ontario - Enbridge) and it'south at sea level. How would I bank check to run across if there's bypass pipage between suppy and return? When the unit has worked, the return is sufficiently warm.

    Thanks
    Grant

  10. Sufficently warm ways at least 130, I promise. Bypass piping would be a pipe betwixt supply and return normally with a control ball valve.

  11. My experience

I've had one in Toronto for thirteen years with no excessive problems (replaced control after ix years) but I clean the fins every 2 or 3 years. I have a similar installation: 85 twelvemonth erstwhile house with heavey piping and large CI rads. I have a liner and a bypass valve.

In one case I let the deposits build up quite a chip on the fins but fifty-fifty then it didn't seem to upshot the performance. I regularly go a good 'yr to year modify in consumption' vs 'year to year modify in degree days' ratio and it was not different before ar subsequently the major build up.

I get a fair bit of ash falling from the vent hood, something I never noticed when I lived in Winnipeg and supposedly used the same natural gas from Alberta. Could the natural gas take changed that much or is information technology the differnce in the air that is burnt-more smog in the air in Toronto?

  12. the drama continues

Well..... Folks might find this somewhat entertaining but I'five made progress with my boiler.

I recalled last yr that I both had a melted downwards electronics module on the unit (honeywell) and a blown fuse, I opened up the access console and institute the electronics bundle housing distorted. Worse yet, if I press confronting the electronics, the burner ignights....

    Any thoughts on this one???

    Cheers
